Yume Develops Wearable Art for Cafe Hiro

by Maria Fotopoulos

(September 2006) — "Art should be edible," Salvador Dali is reported to have said. This line might be interpreted to mean art should be as important as food. A line that certainly lends itself to interpretation, Southern California artist Yume might modify it to say, "Art should always be part of the eating experience."

Cafe Hiro Nametag With this belief, Yume recently completed individualized nametags for the staff of Cafe Hiro, the Cypress, California, restaurant which chef/owner Hiro Ohiwa defines as home to "borderless" cuisine, with influences of Japan, Paris and Le Cordon Bleu and California.

Cafe Hiro Nametag The artful nametags made in assorted colors are described as a "mix of organics with a little Bling, Bling," according to the artist. All specially handcrafted for the restaurant, the top portion of the tags features the restaurant logo and is made of clay, keeping the tags light for the wearer, while the bottom part, where the waiter's name is written, is made of a light wood and sticker jewels. The two parts of the tag are held together with organic kitchen twine.

The waiter's name can be written on the tag with white permanent marker. Since the two parts of the tag are separable, the top portion can be reused when staff changes.

Yume's art comes from experience in life's difficulties and joys. It is textured by dreams, fantasy and imagination, and it is influenced by people she meets from diverse cultures. "Insect Series," her current work, developed out of a fascination with the wonder and beauty of nature, combined with her love of music and film. More information is at www.yumeartstudio.com .

Cafe Hiro is at 10509 Valley View St., Cypress, 714.527.6090.
